Overview
Joby Aviation is leading the industry in introducing a revolutionary urban air mobility aircraft featuring the innovative all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) JAS4-1 air vehicle. The Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System (IFPCS) product team is seeking a highly qualified and experienced individual with a proven and distinguished technical career to join its leadership team as a technical fellow.
The Integrated Flight and Propulsion Control System includes all the primary flight control functions (pilot inceptors, flight sensors, processing and communications, control laws, and control effectors) and some vehicle management functions.
The position offers the opportunity to have direct impact on the certification success of the JAS4-1 air vehicle and its new and novel technologies in the emerging Urban Air Mobility (UAM) marketplace.
Responsibilities
- Strategic and tactical advisor to the IFPCS IPT helping to develop the best aircraft achievable given the constraints and realities in front of Joby, including figuring out achievable performance, finding workarounds, and generating credible lead-times and levels of effort for all the options to help decide recommended approaches.
- Provide solutions to existing and emergent IFPCS technical and certification issues, challenges, and risks.
- Help the IFPCS IPT execute statements of work more effectively and efficiently including improving integration among intra-IPT stakeholders, harmonizing deliverables, and accelerating work product closure.
- Help drive quality and consistency into IFPCS certification artifacts including laying out the objective and standards for each and coaching team members.
- Help the IFPCS team in establishing and executing a robust and coherent safety-of-flight process for prototype and type design aircraft.
Required
- Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field preferred (M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics also acceptable).
- 30+ years of experience in senior technical roles within aerospace, urban air mobility, advanced air mobility, autonomous vehicles, or similar industries.
- Advanced understanding and expertise in control systems (including non-linear dynamic inversion), system design, and safety analysis.
- Expertise in fly-by-wire, autonomous systems, robotics, and safety-critical technologies.
- Proven leadership experience in building, directing, and facilitating communication between multidisciplinary technical teams including propulsion, structures, loads and aeroelasticity, primary flight controls and GNC, from R&D to product launch.
- Ability to lead complex multidisciplinary projects in highly regulated and dynamic environments.
- Deep understanding of FAA and DoD certification processes for highly autonomous and safety-critical systems.
- Effective communicator across teams and upward to executive leadership.
- Management experience at all levels, including the C-suite is a bonus.
Desired
Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $159,700 - $278,100/yr.
