Manufacturing Shop Manager Aerospace and Defense
Location: Decatur, AL
The Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations and activities within a precision machining shop. Their responsibilities include:
- Supervising Workers: The supervisor is responsible for managing and directing the work of employees, including assigning tasks, providing guidance, and ensuring that work is completed efficiently and according to quality standards.
- Machining Oversight: Supervising the machining process from start to finish, including machine selection, raw material, fixturing, programming, and assembly of components. This involves ensuring that machining tasks are carried out according to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards.
- Safety Compliance: Ensuring that all workers adhere to safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment. This may involve conducting safety training sessions, performing safety inspections, and addressing any safety concerns or issues that arise.
- Quality Control: Monitoring the quality of machined products to ensure they meet industry standards and customer specifications. This includes inspecting finished products, implementing quality control measures, and addressing any defects or discrepancies.
- Production Scheduling: Planning and scheduling production activities to meet customer deadlines and production targets. This involves coordinating with other departments, such as procurement and shipping, to ensure materials are available and products are delivered on time.
- Equipment Selection and Maintenance: Selecting appropriate machine and equipment/tools based on project requirements and ensuring they are properly maintained and calibrated for optimal performance. This includes regular inspection, maintenance, and repair of welding machines, cutting equipment, and other fabrication tools.
- Inventory Management: Managing inventory levels of raw materials and finished products to optimize production efficiency and minimize waste. This includes tracking inventory levels, submitting material orders, and implementing inventory control measures.
- Continuous Improvement: Identifying opportunities for process improvements in fabrication and welding techniques to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety. This may involve implementing new technologies, training programs, or procedural changes to streamline operations and reduce costs.
- Training and Development: Providing training and development opportunities for staff to enhance their skills and knowledge in steel fabrication techniques, safety procedures, and equipment operation.
- Communication: Serving as a liaison between management, employees, and other departments to communicate production goals, progress, and any issues or concerns that arise.
- Collaboration and Communication: Collaborate with team members, such as quality, supply chain, programming, project managers and senior management, to ensure seamless workflow and project completion. Communicate effectively regarding project progress, challenges, and potential issues to supervisors.
- Communicate production status, delays, and issues to relevant management team and COO.
- Management of manufacturing facility and responsible for all aspects of the manufacturing process, including, safety, quality, cost, productivity, scheduling, and customer service.
- Track and manage inventory levels, ensuring that materials and supplies are available when needed and minimizing production delays.
- Create a safe, healthy, and positive working environment.
- Establish and maintain the highest quality standards for each Manufacturing process, as well as for all finished products shipped to every customer.
- Establish and maintain Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the Production.
- Meet customer delivery commitments on-time, first-time, every-time.
- Operate the plant in a highly productive, cost-effective manner.
- Creation, implementation, and improvement of Daily Management systems, including Safety, Production Performance measures, Quality Defect Elimination, etc.
- Lead the Daily Management systems to ensure high levels of quality, problem identification, root cause investigation and resolution, productivity, and associate involvement and ownership, including:
- Daily Direction Setting shift meetings as well as Team meetings and operating reviews.
- Supervises work of others including planning, assigning schedule, and reviewing staffing and work, while maintaining quality standards. Ensuring that production performance measurements are in place and being met regarding standards and expected outputs.
- Assesses machinist performance, monitors training, proficiency of ERP system usage and distinguishes between levels 1, 2 and 3.
- Ensure supply chain of components are ready for service production to run and meet shipments.
- Plan and schedule logistics with Shipping.
- Ensure labor and BOM are correct for costing, update accordingly in ERP System.
- Apply good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with quality, purchasing, shipping/receiving, manufacturing, management, and other plant and office personnel.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of production or plant supervisor experience.
- 2-year advanced education-in-trade (Preferred).
- Competent in implementing, training, and monitoring appropriate use of aerospace machine shop ERP System.
- Experienced machinist with a sophisticated understanding of CNC machinery and appropriate applications.
- Expert interpreting prints and flow down requirements.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $85,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
